my counseling skills before starting the profession (rant)

I’m currently in my school counseling program with just one semester left, and I can’t help but feel that I’m not fully ready to be a counselor yet. While I’m learning practical skills through my internship, I feel like an additional semester would help me better master my abilities. I’m thankful to be receiving evaluations from my site supervisors, as they’ve provided me with a clear understanding of where I currently stand and what areas I can improve in.

In my defense, this past semester, I took on more responsibilities in my program and balanced a second job. I’ve realized that in our field, we often wear many hats. Moving into this last half of my program, I hope to use my evaluations as a learning opportunity to become a more effective counselor.

That said, I’ve been open to the idea of pursuing college counseling after graduation to further strengthen my skills before transitioning into a school counseling role.
