PhD degree at 39
Hello everyone, I just defended my PhD thesis earlier this month. I have 3 first author publication and 1 coauthor publication. The coauthor publication is published in a journal with IF 80 above, 2 first author publications in Q1 and one first author publication in Q2. My supervisor told me that he cannot extend my contract and also advised me that I’m too old (39 year old woman) to apply for postdoc positions. He also thinks me being single may pose problems when applying for postdoc positions. I felt a little taken aback by these words but I’m trying to stay afloat psychologically. Due to issues in my personal life, I started PhD at a later stage in life and it took me 6 years to finish. I definitely feel charged to accomplish more. There always was bias in the lab against me ( the only international member in the team) yet I focused on my work because I’ve wanted a PhD. Does age matter too much when applying for postdoc positions ?
Edit: Thank you so much for all your replies 🥹 It is giving me that push to keep going, to keep trying. Thank you so much!
