Advice for orientation period in ED
Posted this on the NP sub, only response I got was from a PA, so I figured I would put this out to you folks. I have benefited greatly from looking through old posts on this sub, thank you for your time!
Howdy folks,
I will start my first job in a community ED very soon. I went to school intending to stay in critical care but fell in love with emergency medicine during a rotation, so I have a steep learning curve ahead of me. I'll be taking care of adults only. I have a very supportive provider group eager to train me and answer questions. They will give me 3 months of orientation, following both APPs and physicians. I am told they are very flexible with new APPs on their pace over their first year.
I'm currently working through CCME's ED Boot Camp program. I've read a few chapters of Tintanelli's and hope to work my way through the book over time. I plan on getting an EMRAP subscription when I can access CME funds. I have a lot to learn procedure-wise. Most of the procedures I got to do during clinicals were critical care oriented: CVCs, intubations, art lines, etc. I have a suture kit and am refreshing myself on the basics.
How would you recommend I make the most out of my orientation period? I realize this may sound like an obvious question. I will, of course, ask lots of questions and study on my off days as much as I can around family time. However, I'm very nervous, and I would appreciate the perspective of those of you who have been there. I recognize I have a long way to go here and I have so much to learn.
Thank you for your time!
