Brooks saddles?

I finally got my sit bones measured and found out that the saddle I'm currently using is too big for me. I always had a hunch, but it wasn't terrible so I just dealt with it. Also, without knowing what size I needed, I had no guarantee my next saddle wouldn't also be the wrong size. But now that I am armed with actual numbers, I want to get one that fits.

I see a lot of riders in general use and love Brooks saddles. I love the idea of it, but I'm concerned about the leather and the fact that I when I sign up for a race, I race sun/rain/cold/hot/dusty/muddy. I don't always get the bike cleaned immediately after a race (sometimes it takes a day or two), and I only wash my bike every week or two between races unless it gets really muddy.

For those who have one, how intensive is the upkeep?

If you had one or considered it but ended up with a different brand, what are you using and loving right now?
