The Golden Rule Can Fuck Off

"Treat others the way you would want to be treated". Anybody else get fucked over by this? Just realized that I've completely internalized that phrase and it's a cause to a lot of internal friction i have in relationships.

I have this instinct to treat people the way I want to be treated, and everyone thinks I'm an aloof, arrogant asshole when really I think I'm just polite. Then i get anxious because i have this internalized message of what i think i should do but also this idea from experience about the fake mask i should put on to actuality fit in. The rule should just say "fake smile and accommodate the needs of others against your instincts".
