Multiplayer save file

So me and my friend play on a private server that I host and when joining up today he accidentally clicked new game instead of continue and it didn’t ask are you sure or anything just instantly threw him into a new character where he lost all of his progress and all the tools and weapons we have collected. Is that save gone for good and he just has to deal with it?
