How to play Minecraft Alpha in the new launcher?

I wanted to look at the old versions of Minecraft because I've never played them before, but I couldn't find pre-1.0 versions in the profile dropdown and a legacy/historical check box wasn't available next to releases and snapshots.

I've basically tried everything I can think of, so how to you play legacy versions?
